So, you thought you missed college?

So I stumbled upon this video of a geology lab at my school; my lab was at a different time, but this clip should give you a taste of all the learning that almost happens at this prestigeous school. Oh,and yes, the girl in the hat is the same girl who won KTLA's "Audition".

I haven't had much to say lately...

...but I will say this, Idyllwild's cold right now.

Palm Desert Class

While doing some last minute Christmas shopping in the desert yesterday I stumbled upon this jem of a sculpture. Composed of plastic molds, the figures are bolted together. The best part is that this is located next to the parking lot of the gas station where I stopped to fill up. I guess it goes to prove that just because a community has money, does not mean that they have class.

At least I have Doug (the cat)

What does it mean to be a month away from graduation and still have to finish your senior thesis? It means that I get to spend my break typing said thesis, with only my cat and my music to keep me company; I am determined to get this thing done!

Beautiful Idyllwild

Finals are over, and as I settle into vacation mode, I cannot help but notice how amazingly good it is to be home.

Art History Quiz!!!

In the spirit of finals, and because tomorrow is my Modern Art final, it's time for a quiz! Name the artist, title of work, and date; extra credit if you can name the "-ism" this work is associated with.

Protectors of the Kiln

Some of the most interesting art on campus is that which has been left behind by past students. Perhaps it was too weird to take home and place on a mantle, too awkward to travel with, or just not what the artist expected. In the ceramics room there are a plethora of abandoned sculptures; today, while waiting for the bisque to be done, I noticed some of the abandoned works that have been placed atop our kilns.

The trend I noticed among all of the sculptures were faces, sometimes funny and sometimes grotesque; they remind me a little of gargoyles protecting a fortress, they make the kiln seem like a sacred space.

QUIET HOURS!!!!

Why is it that finals week is the time people choose to go crazy? We have been put under 24/7 quiet hours here at Chapman University in sunny Orange California, yet the noise level has risen significantly this past week. Perhaps it is the anticipation of finally being done, a rebellion against authority, or simply the glowing immaturity of those that belong to this community. All I know is that studying is made significantly more difficult when people are running past my door like packaderms, bouncing balls against my wall, skateboarding under my window, and yelling at each other from dorm to dorm; even now at 11:55 pm. This little rant has been brought to you by the letter P for PLEASE stop, and the number 3 for days I have left before I can go home for Christmas break.

Back to Orange...trudge...

I spent the weekend in Cambria and along the central coast of California, trying to decide if moving there and working at Hearst Castle would work out in the grand scheme of things. At this point in time it doesn't seem to be a viable option, but I had an amazing weekend and I'm a little sad to be back in Orange. Anyways, here are some shots of my adventure.
My quaint, little, hostel "The Bridge Street Inn."
The farmers market.
The historic cemetery.

The public library...yup...a whole library in one room.

Cambria wa much colder than I thought it would be.

Hanging the Show

In a furiously creative swarm, a crew gathered in the Guggenheim gallery last night to hang the student show "Purveyors of Optical Mayhem." It will open tonight, hopefully to a grateful audience.

Here is Justin, one of the brave souls who volunteered to curate the student show this year; he looks overcome with the burden.
A pile of rejected paintings.
Travis trimming his tree.

Danny, being encouraging.
Bonnie, setting up her bunnies.
Jen, painting the entrance wall.
Lamia, diligently labeling all of the accepted work.Me, struggling to free the silicone from this stupid tube! How can I secure my sculpture if the junk won't even come out?!?

Student Show Submissions

With finals fast approaching, the student show has finally arrived. Tonight the entire art faculty will sift through the submissions and leave behind a trail of, what they deem to be, the best student work of the semester. Tomorrow the hanging committee, myself included, gets to sort through it all and give it some semblance of order; we shall see to what degree of success this goal is reached. The following are some images of this semesters submissions.

This is made with gum wrappers and titled "Cloud".

This is my favorite so far, the title is "Generation Gap."

This is my submission to the show; it stands at about 2 1/2 feet, I titled it "The Rise and Fall of Odilon Redon." Yes, I gave it a pretentious title, just because I can.
