Mustache Bonanza
Keziah, Zack, and I hosted a Mustache party last night. Partially to celebrate the holidays and partially just because I love fake mustaches. Keziah and I made a bunch out of felt, and there were some real hair fake mustaches. Most people switched up the facial hair as the night went on. I started out with this handsome number.
Then I switched to this pink polka dot stash that reminded me of a creation by Yayoi Kusama.
Chris was basically weirded out by me in a mustache.
The night was a success, in my humble opinion. Take a gander at the creations below.

The Wake Board
My talented roommate Keziah was commissioned to design a wake board for her cousin Noah when his snapped in half. I have to brag about them both, because it was a collaboration. When the drawing was first produced I told them that it looked like a psychedelic cyclops walrus, but it really did turn out well. Here is the original drawing.
This is the finished product.

Merry Christmas Eve!!!

Brought to you by the Nativity scene at the Idyllwild Presbyterian church. Now, this display has been done the exact same way for longer than I've been alive, and I must highlight what makes it unique.

Notice the variety of animals represented. It reminds me a little of the movie 'Love Actually' when one of the children proclaims, "Mom I landed the part of first lobster!" To which her mother questions, "There was more than one lobster present at the birth of Jesus?" Well in Idyllwild there is a skunk, and a deer with a mohawk.

A bear with a honey pot.

Of course, there is a squirrel; this is without taking the real live squirrels into account.

Also, two dimensional Mary gave birth to a three dimensional Christ child.

So there it is, a traditional Idyllwild Christmas.

Free Rice

I have to give credit to my hipster mom for showing me this when I was home for Thanksgiving. I had meant to post a blog about it awhile ago and created a link, but forgot to explain that link. It wasn't until I was browsing through last months Rolling Stone when I saw a review of the site and remembered my plan. That's right mom, you told me about this site before I found it in Rolling Stone. Basically, this is a web word game that challenges your vocabulary. The game adjusts to your vocabulary level based on how many words you get right; for every correct word twenty grains of rice are donated to the United Nations World Food Program. Now, twenty grains doesn't seem like much, but after playing for awhile the piles of rice add up. The site was created in October and already 9,868,446,910 grains of rice have been donated. Check it out freerice.com.

Idyllwild's "Wild Child"

I was informed earlier this week that one of Idyllwild's finest, Nate Lowman, has made it into one high class magazine called "Star". So high class in fact that when I tried to find it at Borders I was informed that they don't carry "Star", "US Weekly" yes but not "Star". I finally found it at a 7 Eleven and read the article inside. Known for his bullet hole paintings, Nate has made a name for himself in the New York art scene. So what qualifies him to be published in such a fine journal? Not his art, no, he's dating Mary Kate Olsen. Nate went to school with my sister, and graciously let me tag along with the older kids to play in his tree house at ISOMATA faculty pot lucks. Who knew that some day he would gain such status?

I'M AN INTERN!!!!
Wednesday, December 12
Sigh...
I have not heard anything final from LUX yet. I realized today that I haven't posted anything since the day of my trial run, but that's mostly because things have been a little crazy lately. I was assured that this is also why it may take awhile for LUX to reach a decision; the few people who actually run the place are consumed in holiday events and such just as we all are, so they said it may be a couple of weeks. All I can say is that I'm hopeful because my trial day was amazing. I spent the day researching artists and galleries and writing about the comparisons between the next artist to take up residence at the institute and historical movements and styles. Yes, I was in academic heaven. Everyone I spoke to that day mentioned how happy I sounded, and this is when I realized how badly I need to move into the art world and out of Toyota. If it was evident before it is looming over me now, and I feel more frustrated than ever because I am truly pushing myself to reach that very goal, but all my efforts have been fruitless thus far. Aside from that? I've been inspired by the season and have been baking a little. Bellow you will see my home made apple pie and an apple cobbler. The cobbler didn't turn out as I had expected it to because we didn't have baking soda and I tried a substitute that didn't quite work. It did actually taste good though, it was just a little heavy; if nothing else, it looked pretty.

Call Backs
I realize I haven't posted too much lately, it's been a little hectic around here, so here's a quick update. I had my interview with the LUX Art Institute on Tuesday and was asked to come back today for sort of a trial run. Basically I'm considering this a call back, which is kind of cool because a full day is better than a half an hour conversation to figure out if I'll be a good fit for the internship and if they'll be a good company to work for. I do have some concerns about making this internship work out with my current job because it sounds like the hours would occasionally conflict, but I'm willing to find a restaurant job so I can work at night and intern during the day. I know it's a sacrifice, and frankly a little risky, but I'd rather take a chance on advancing my career than play it safe at Toyota. The internship, if I get it, will last six months. If things work out they might offer me a full time staff position at the end of that six months. If nothing else I will have a resume with something a little more substantial than The Idyllwild Area Museum, and some good connections to galleries and other museums. I'm not going to stress finding a new job until I am given a solid offer for this internship though, but I'll keep you updated.
