Protectors of the Kiln

Some of the most interesting art on campus is that which has been left behind by past students. Perhaps it was too weird to take home and place on a mantle, too awkward to travel with, or just not what the artist expected. In the ceramics room there are a plethora of abandoned sculptures; today, while waiting for the bisque to be done, I noticed some of the abandoned works that have been placed atop our kilns.

The trend I noticed among all of the sculptures were faces, sometimes funny and sometimes grotesque; they remind me a little of gargoyles protecting a fortress, they make the kiln seem like a sacred space.
