Some of the most interesting art on campus is that which has been left behind by past students. Perhaps it was too weird to take home and place on a mantle, too awkward to travel with, or just not what the artist expected. In the ceramics room there are a plethora of abandoned sculptures; today, while waiting for the bisque to be done, I noticed some of the abandoned works that have been placed atop our kilns. The trend I noticed among all of the sculptures were faces, sometimes funny and sometimes grotesque; they remind me a little of gargoyles protecting a fortress, they make the kiln seem like a sacred space.
