In Marseille France a woman has been arrested for kissing a painting by American artist
Cy Twombly. Police report that the woman left a lipstick smudge on the canvas, which had been part of a temporary exhibit at the Marseille MOCA. Officials aren't releasing the title of the damaged painting, but they are reporting that the painting is valued at $2 million. My question is why? What prompted this woman to kiss the painting in the first place? Cy Twombly's paintings are abstract, squiggles of color, and graffiti scrawled messages. What on earth would inspire someone to kiss a Cy Twombly painting is beyond me.
