Who?

White Robes by Leon Spilliaert 1904

I discovered this artist while reading into the history of symbolist art. Struck by the bold forms, and amused by the forms themselves, I set aside this image. Spilliaert is one of those artists whose work lands between definable movements, Symbolism and Expressionism, which means that he is largely ignored when discussing the history of art. His work has been classified as an outward expression of inner spirituality and contemplation. I think it deserves a second look; as does much of what has been excluded from the artistic canon.
